The Story of Yellow Jasmine

According to Cantonese legend, there was a beautiful florist girl named Yellow Jasmine who lived in Chuangtou Village. She loved the yellow jasmine flower which she was named after. A new emperor ascended the throne of the Han Empire and he heard stores told of this girl’s beauty. He had her elected to the palace where she eventually won the emperor’s love. In order to make her happy, the emperor ordered his subjects to plant yellow jasmine in all of the palace gardens and all of the maids were made to wear the flower every day. When the maids got up and washed and dressed, the flowers fell into the stream. Both the bridge that crossed the stream and the artificial lake that it filtered into were name “Linhua” in remembrance of the story.
