As many of you are aware of, CISPA is the bastard reincarnation of SOPA/PIPA, the internet censorship bills that the government tried to sneak past the American public. The law is suspected of being made with the purpose of invading privacy and spying on citizens. Digital Trends describes it very well:
“CISPA, officially known as H.R. 3523, is a cybersecurity bill currently in the House of Representatives that makes it easier for the government to share classified “cyber threat intelligence” with private companies, and for private companies to share information with the government. Neither side is required to share anything, but the bill makes it legal for them to do so. The stated goal is to better protect both the government and the private sector from “cyber threats.”
The most important parts of the bill that people should know about is that:
1. It WILL allow the federal government and partner corporations to spy on you.
2. Information gained through the use of CISPA can be used for almost any purpose.
3. Information could be given to the military and never shared with the public.
4. If a company uses your data for suspicious purposes, they are fully protected by the law and it’s nearly impossible to sue them.
As you can see, this is just another stepping stone on the path to totalitarianism that is slowly chipping away at our civil liberties. What can we do to stop it? Write your representatives. Here’s a link to the House of Representatives here: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
